Some people are able to stand up and give a speech without a second thought. Others are petrified at the thought of public speaking. You may be a capable public speaker, or it may be one of your biggest fears. In either case, the following advice may be of use to you.
Your audience will not remain attentive unless you work to keep them listening. You have to put in your best effort if you want people to connect with you and stay with you throughout your speech. Your speech is a performance, you have to make people want to listen.
It is very important that you display enthusiasm when you are speaking publicly. There is no way that you will get others excited about a topic if it seems like you are bored with it. If the topic is one that is a bit more emotionally driven, you have to show them that you care.
Always look at your audience when speaking. While it can be easy to get distracted by other things around you, don’t! It is important that the audience has your undivided attention, in order for them to get the message that you would like them to get.
Try to relax before and during your speech. Breathe deeply and remember that you are well-prepared, so you have nothing to worry about. Some say that it helps to envision your audience members in their underwear to help you relax. This sort of visualization can help you look and feel more relaxed while speaking.
You should know about the room you are speaking in. If the room doesn’t have a microphone, figure out how far you can expect your voice to carry. Use whatever equipment is available and get familiar with it. Take advantage of the visual aids that are there, if any. Figure out how much eye contact should be made.
Make sure that the beginning of your speech is a moment to relax. Greet and address your audience. Then pause for three seconds. This gives them a chance to focus on you, while you get a moment to transform your nervous energy into enthusiasm for the material you are about to deliver.
Take the time to research other important speeches. The internet has a wealth of recorded speeches so that you can observe how they do it. Focus on the qualities that you liked in their speech and emulate them. Look for qualities such as their ease in speaking, their humor and how they capture the attention of the audience.
Use YouTube to watch and view the masters of public speaking. Watch not only for their content, but also for their styles and habits. Pay close attention to famous moments and replicate such mannerisms sparingly for specific effect. Watch speeches of your favorite presidents or other national leaders, as you can find videos going back decades.
